A new personal web by Facebook Open Graph platform

Posted Abril 22nd, 2010 in Applications, General by Adrian

“… the most transformative thing we’ve ever done for the Web.”

Pushing out new tools for developers to simplify integration of social actions, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined a series of what he says will be simplified and more seamless experiences for users with the Facebook Open Graph platform during Facebook’s F8 developers conference in San Francisco. These social plug-ins, which are dropped into sites and allow the user to see which of your friends like content around the Web, will make Facebook applications a lot more social, said Zuckerberg, without sharing any unnecessary data.

Revisit: Visualizing the Temporal Dynamics of Twitter Streams

Posted Abril 21st, 2010 in Applications, General by Adrian

Revisit is a real–time visualization of twitter messages (tweets) around a specific topic. You can create your own twitter wall at a conference or an ambient display at your company or whatever use you come up with. It provides a sense of the temporal dynamics in the twitter stream, and emphasizes the conversational threads established by retweets and @replies. It’s not a static image, though: When a new related tweet arrives, it is highlighted; you can see its content and the relation to other tweets on the timeline. When there are no new tweets, a tweet is randomly chosen from the bunch. The result is a nifty, animated visualization that can provide great background on a conference or a presentation. To make it even more attractive, you can type in a custom title and switch to full screen.

Jeff Veen: Designing for Big Data

Posted Abril 14th, 2010 in General, People & Groups by Adrian

From the Web2.0 Expo, a talk from Jeff Veen entitled “Designing for Big Data” shows his philosophy behind creating visualizations that allow users to “tell their own story” from data.  It’s a great 20-minute presentation, check it out after the break.

Tim Berners-Lee: The next Web of open, linked data

Posted Abril 13th, 2010 in Applications, General, People & Groups by Adrian

In 2010 Tim Berners-Lee returned to TED to follow up his great speech about open and linked data from 2009. At this years conference Sir Berners-Lee presented some of the results that sprouted from open data.

As usual Tims presentation is very passionate about the subject and he shares his vision of the future of the web in an understandable manner. If you haven’t already seen the videos of the presentation I recommend doing so.

Search Start Page: Symbaloo

Posted Abril 13th, 2010 in Applications, General by Adrian

Symbaloo is a front page of sorts, offering much in the way of search and centralized access to other links you frequent on the Internet.

With this service, you get tiny modules that have been bunched together by default for many of your every day purposes: travel and shopping search, music and torrents, podcasts and RSS feeds. These can be rearranged, added to and deleted, according to your preferences. A search box in the center of the screen lets you perform a regular keyword search, or a specific search based on a module you’ve chosen; for instance, clicking on the dictionary module gives you the option to do a dictionary.com search, and a drop down menu allows you to choose Merriam Webster or Wiktionary instead. While the main function of Symbaloo is currently for search purposes, it could easily evolve into something that resembles Pageflakes or Netvibes, which has more widget and ajax functionality.

Live Labs Pivot: A Massive Interactive Zoom on Data

Posted Abril 12th, 2010 in Applications, General by Adrian

Viewing information and data in this way, is a lot like swimming in a living information infographic.” During his very impressive TED talkGary Flake, Technical Fellow at Microsoft, demos the novel and still experimental Pivot [getpivot.com] technology. Pivot is a completely new way to browse and arrange massive amounts of images and data online. Built on the Seadragon zooming technology, it enables spectacular zooming in and out of web databases, and the discovery of patterns and links invisible in standard web browsing.

Right now, in this world, we think about data as being this curse, we talk about the curse of information overload, drowning in data. What if we can turn that upside down, so that instead of navigating from one thing to the next, we get used to the habit of being able to go from many things to many things and then being able to see the patterns that were otherwise hidden.

Virtual and Real spaces generated by Music

Posted Abril 11th, 2010 in Portfolio by Adrian

The main objective of this research work is to explore a new digital design process that uses melody information to generate novel spaces. Various melodies materialize their basic information and generate novel spaces. For each musical composition, many instruments were played, and the sound of each of them was then materialized in the final space. Alternative design processes are born, and a completely new architecture defined. In order to accomplish this research work, it was necessary to combine knowledge from different fields, namely, architecture, music, mathematics and computer science.
